Intentional Communities

I was at an outdoor gathering recently with such an inspiring group of people that I got this vision of living in a sustainable village with only these kind of people. I suppose many people have a similar fantasy of the perfect utopian society, and have been attempting this for decades. The older generations of people I tell about this come up with plenty of reasons why it can't be done. However, I think if you had just the right people, it's totally possible. Organizing them all would be the challenge.
Wouldn't it be awesome... grow much of your own food organically, have some kind of businesses in order to bring revenue in (someone suggested a music studio where any bands/ dj's could come and record their music. also, internet is allowing people in very remote places to have well-paying jobs now.), everyone could use their particular areas of expertise to help develop a well-rounded little community with a very forward-thinking school for kids, healers, construction people, artists, accountants, etc.
I hear what people are doing these days is taking advantage of the mass movement of populations back to the cities due to increasing gas prices. Many small towns are being left and these ghost towns can be bought up and used for precisely this kind of development. I was looking into alternative housing options, and decided that a yurt (30 ft diameter for $10K) would be a fabulous living arrangement. There are some really nice ones, and the smaller size would help me keep the clutter to a minimum.
So how does one get involved in such a project? Ideally it would be somewhere up north, like Oregon. A wetter place might guarantee a stabler food supply. Power would be from solar and other alternative sources. We'd be totally off the grid. I get so excited when I think about this- I know it has to be possible!
